MEETING DATE:  11/14/2016

SUBJECT:  Gateway Sign Interlocal Agreement with Alachua County

PREPARED BY:  Adam Boukari, Assistant City Manager

RECOMMENDED ACTION:

Approve the Interlocal Agreement Between Alachua County and the City of Alachua for the Placement of a Gateway Sign Upon Alachua County Property.

Summary

The City Commission has directed the installation of "Welcome Signs" along U.S. Hwy 441  at the southeastern and northwestern gateways to Alachua.  Staff has investigated multiple sites for potential signage installation at the City's southeastern entrance.  After investigation, staff recommends the installation of such a sign on Alachua County property located at the existing wayside park.

In order for the City to be able to erect a sign on the property, the City must receive approval from Alachua County.  City and County staff have worked together to draft an interlocal agreement to accomplish this end.  Therefore, this evening, City staff is bringing the Interlocal Agreement Between Alachua County and the City of Alachua for the Placement of a Gateway Sign Upon Alachua County Property to the City Commission for consideration.

The City will be responsible for all costs associated with the sign installation and future maintenance.  The City will also be required to comply with the Alachua County sign ordinance.

If approved by the City Commission, the Board of County Commissioners will consider the interlocal agreement during their Dec. 13, 2016 meeting.  If approved by the BOCC, City staff will expeditiously move forward with the final design, permitting and installation.

Staff is finalizing its investigation process for the sign location along the northwestern gateway along U.S. Hwy 441 and will keep the City Commission apprised.
