Mayor Coerper read the proclamation and proclaim the week of May 17 - May 23, 2015 as National Public Works Week

Summary

The City of Alachua's public works are the infrastructure and services we provide within public right of ways related to streets, roads, traffic control, storm water management, solid waste collection, and mosquito control.

The division of our government tasked with maintaining our public works is our Public Works Division. This work group is staffed by eight (8) full-time professionals committed to ensuring that our public infrastructure serves our residents most cost effectively.

As our City's infrastructure is so varied, these "heroes" must have broad knowledge and skill sets for maintenance, heavy equipment operation, traffic sign as well as marking rules and regulations; solid waste collection procedures, and mosquito control operations.

The City Public Works staff also provides mowing maintenance for certain utility facilities. They provide staffing for all of the City's special events: the A.L. Mebane Alumni Homecoming Parade, Great American Cleanup, Spring/Fall Festival, July Fourth Celebration, Halloween on Main Street, Christmas Tree Lighting and Annual Christmas Parade.

The Public Works staff always mobilizes during natural disasters and safe-guards our community during these events. They are the first to arrive and last to leave.

With an annual operating budget of approximately $1.3 million, the Public Works infrastructure tallies approximately: 47 miles of paved road, 3.69 miles of unpaved right of ways, 38 storm water retention facilities, miles of open swales and storm water conveyance piping and hundreds of storm water catch basins and manholes.
