MEETING DATE:  1/14/2019

SUBJECT:  Turkey Creek Elevated Storage Tank Maintenance Approval

PREPARED BY:  Rodolfo Valladares; Public Services Director

RECOMMENDED ACTION:

Approve the proposals from Suez (Utility Service Co, Inc.) in the amount of $129,174 to complete activities necessary for the repainting of the Turkey Creek elevated storage tank.

Summary

The Turkey Creek Elevated Storage Tank is evaluated and inspected on a regular basis.  Inspections look for signs of corrosion, leaks, structural integrity, condition of connections and sanitary items such as the overflow discharge and vent screening.

The City contracts with Utility Service Co., Inc, (now known as Suez) for inspection services, which include:

  • Annual inspections and services of the tank to ensure that the structure is in sound water tight condition.
  • Biennial inspections and washouts.

Under this agreement, Utility Services cleans and repaints the interior and/or exterior of the tank as such time as complete repainting is needed.  The need for interior painting is determined by the thickness of the existing liner and its protective condition.  The need for exterior painting is determined by the appearance and protective condition of the existing paint.

It has been determined that the exterior of the tank needs to be repainted.  In order to complete the repainting, it is necessary for the tank to be surface prepared (i.e. to SP 10, near-white blasting cleaning).  In order for the efficient coordination of the surface preparation and painting activities and to minimize tank down time, it is recommended Suez perform all activities.  A bypass system will also be included to ensure there is no interruption in water service.
