Summary

The City of Alachua Commission Adopted Ordinance 12-14 on Feb. 13, 2012 establishing a Youth Advisory Council (YAC).  The purpose of the Council is to stimulate and foster the active participation of young individuals in the addressing of issues impacting the youth of the community to ensure leaders of tomorrow have input in the local government process today.  The YAC is to recommend to the City Commission policies, procedures and philosophies and serve as advocates for issues and initiatives to positively impact the lives of youth, among other duties.

The YAC is to be composed of five (5) voting members.  The initial appointments of voting members were as follows: Two (2) voting members for two (2) year terms and three (3) voting members for one (1) year terms.  Thereafter all terms of voting members shall be for a period of two (2) years.

Members of the Council are required to be enrolled in a public school, private school or a home education program within the City of Alachua in grades nine through twelve or be a resident of the City of Alachua enrolled in such a school/program.

The City advertised for applications for the Council in Alachua County Today July 25 and August 1, 2019.  Notice of the vacancies was also posted on community bulletin boards and the City’s website.

The City received six (6) applications, all of whom meet the enrollment/residency requirement as provided by Ord. 12-14.

The following six (6) applicants are available for appointment:

  • Nathan Breman (12th grade)
  • Addison Grosz (9th grade)
  • Aidan Grosz (9th grade)
  • Caleb Land (12th grade)
  • Lacey Wells (12th grade)
  • Megan Walls (10th grade)

In that six (6) applicants are available for appointment, but only five (5) vacancies, it is important to note that the applicant not appointed as a voting member can still participate as a general member (via appointment by the YAC).  It is recommended that applicants who are in higher grade levels be appointed as they will not have the opportunity to serve as long as lower grade level applicants.

All applicants have been contacted regarding their potential appointment and have been notified of their option to be present should the Commission desire they speak on this appointment.
